- The Endoscopy technician assists with delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of an RN and/or physicians in Endoscopy Department.
- Responsible for assisting with the assessment of patient needs and following through with the designated plan of action.
- Care, handling, reprocessing and storage of endoscopy procedural equipment.
- Safe and efficient turnover of the procedure rooms.
- Assists with other minor procedures within the unit, as assigned.
- Assists with clinical patient care related to ensuring optimal delivery of care under direct supervision of licensed nurses and physicians.
- Sets up, maintains and protects the sterile field.
- Assists with preparation, set up, assists provider, and performs cleanup post procedures of minor procedures as assigned.
- Ensures only necessary equipment remains in patient areas/hallway/storage room, and procedure rooms.
- Ensures full and correct preparation for all procedures (equipment and supplies).
- Complies with correct use of appropriate PPE (gowns, gloves, masks, eye shields).
- Gathers, checks, and opens all needed sterile and clean supplies for procedures.
- Participates in pre-procedure Time Out process.
- Follows correct room equipment cleaning processes post procedure.
- Stocks procedure room supplies per unit routine.
- Restocks department and procedure room equipment and supplies as needed.
- Orders department supplies as assigned to maintain adequate supply stock on hand.
- Checks for adequate linen supply daily.
- Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment as needed and follows up with biomedical department for assistance.
- Performs surgical counts in compliance with department policy.
- Assists with development of department supply PAR levels.
- Assists RN with transfer of patients to endoscopy procedure room and recovery area as assigned.
- Assists RN with positioning of patients using appropriate equipment in procedural room.
- Assists endoscopy staff as needed within scope of practice.
- Disposes of all sharps appropriately.
- Performs correct specimen handling processes.
- Notifies charge nurse of issues or concerns.
- Adheres to appropriate infection prevention practices.
- Performs and maintains correct hand hygiene practices.
- Adheres to correct surgical attire requirements.
- Other tasks as assigned.
- Job Requirements
- One (1) year of experience as a GI Technician required.
- Previous experience as Anesthesia Technician, Patient Care Technician, Perioperative Associate, Sterile Processing Technician, GI Technician, Medical Assistant, or Certified Nursing Aide in acute care or surgical setting required.
- Possession and maintenance of current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card required.
- High school graduate or G.E.D. required.
- Certification as an Endoscopy Technician from the GI/Endoscopy SGNA Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates preferred.
- Must demonstrate understanding and knowledge of clinical procedures performed, sterile techniques, and infection prevention practices.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, physicians, and ancillary personnel.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to manage conflict appropriately and work as a team.
- Compliance with Kern Medical policies, procedures and code of conduct.
- Demonstrate positive attitude, ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and follow through on work-related commitments.
- Ability to learn GI standards quickly.
- Schedule Information
- 8 hour shift: Days Monday through Friday (9:00 AM to 5:30 PM).
- Call required on weekends and weekdays (4:30 PM to 11:00 PM) rotating with all staff.

- Endoscopy Department.
