Senior / Lead Machinist Metals & Tooling
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior / Lead Machinist with a strong background in metal machining and precision manufacturing. This role will be responsible for machining, troubleshooting, and supporting the development of precision components, tooling, fixtures, and production equipment.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on machinist who can work independently from engineering drawings and CAD models, operate and program CNC equipment, and ideally contribute to tooling and fixture design. This position offers an opportunity to serve as a technical resource for the machining team while supporting engineering and production.
Key Responsibilities
Set up, program, and operate CNC mills, lathes, and other precision machining equipment.
Machine components and tooling from a variety of metals, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other alloys.
Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and CAD models.
Design, modify, and manufacture tooling, fixtures, dies, jigs, and production aids.
Partner with Engineering to develop and improve tooling designs for manufacturability, performance, and ease of maintenance.
Perform first-piece inspections and in-process measurements using precision inspection equipment.
Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and dimensional issues and determine appropriate corrective actions.
Select appropriate cutting tools, feeds, speeds, workholding, and machining processes.
Support prototype, low-volume, and production machining requirements.
Maintain tight dimensional tolerances and high standards for part quality and repeatability.
Help identify opportunities to improve machining processes, reduce cycle times, and increase tooling life.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced machinists.
Support preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of machining equipment and tooling.
Qualifications
7+ years of professional machining experience, preferably in a precision manufacturing or tooling environment.
Strong experience machining metals, particularly steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
Proficiency with CNC mills and/or lathes.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and CAD models.
Experience with CNC programming and setup.
Strong knowledge of tooling, fixturing, workholding, cutting tools, and machining processes.
Experience with precision measurement and inspection equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing tooling, fixtures, dies, molds, or jigs.
Experience with SolidWorks, Mastercam, GibbsCAM, Fusion 360, or similar CAD/CAM software.
Tool & Die, Toolmaker, or Journeyman Machinist background.
Experience with prototype and custom machining.
Experience leading or mentoring other machinists.
Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
